Lucky Hit is one of the oldest of the important houses in historic Clarke County. Built in 1791 by Richard Kidder Meade, it is located south of Route 50 in a beautiful area of the county, surrounded by large farms, and across from the 400 acre State Arboretum of Viginia. The views to the east and south are of mountains and rolling fields: to the west is the village of White Post, where a survey marker was placed by a young George Washington when he surveyed the area. The property includes two adjacent parcels, one of 30 acres (tax ID 28--A-39) with the house, and the other 54.3 acres (tax ID #28--A-39B), which has one dwelling unit right. The larger parcel is open and flat, and would make a great location for a horse facility. The original house is built of brick, with 16 ft. ceilings, all the original doors and molding, original floors, eight wood-burning fireplaces, of which seven are usable, all in excellent condition. The rooms are classically proportioned, with a balance between formality and warmth. The entrance hall, with library and formal living room on one side and office and dining room on the other, leads to the staircase and on through to the screened porch which was added across the rear and recently glassed in for year-round use. The upstairs bedrooms in the original house are large, light-filled, and include a large dressing room, next to the primary bedroom, with closets and storage. A 1947 brick addition to the west side houses the eat-in kitchen, the flower arranging room, built-in pantry, two bedrooms with two baths upstairs, and a 2 car garage below. The basement is fully finished with the old floor beams exposed. Behind the house is a charming summer kitchen of the same vintage as the main house, a heated pool and spa with pergola, and various well-established planting beds. To the west is a bank barn, once used for horses, with a large wood-working shop, formerly art studio, on the upper level. A large storage shed is full of seasoned firewood, and there are any number of productive fruit trees and vines near the barn. The owners used Starlink for internet.
